Advantia Health is seeking an experienced Perinatal Genetic Counselor to join our Maternal Fetal Medicine Department. Work in a collaborative environment, providing genetic counseling for preconception, routine prenatal, and high-risk indications. Opportunities exist for contribution to outreach programs and in-services to referring providers, presentations to professional and community groups, contribution to family practice resident training, program development, and quality improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specialty perinatal genetic consultation to patients and their families. Serves as a resource to healthcare staff, including physicians and other primary care providers.
  • Discusses prognosis and management options with the patients and their families; explains disease signs and symptoms, probability of recurrence, prognosis, diagnostic options and procedures, alternate courses of action and available options.
  • Coordinates patient care with other healthcare providers, arranging specialized consultations in tertiary care centers and other referrals as indicated by individual patient needs.
  • Counsels on full range of available prenatal genetic testing, such as aneuploidy screening, targeted and expanded carrier screening, recurrent pregnancy loss work up, and diagnostic testing options of CVS and amniocentesis (must have knowledge of current technologies, including microarray and whole exome/whole genome sequencing, as appropriate) and obtains consent for indicated procedures.
  • Compiles complete family history/pedigree, obtains and reviews medical records, assesses risk of genetic disease and assists with grief and crisis counseling resources to individuals and/or families.
  • Provides follow-up patient care post genetic testing with referrals as appropriate for specialty services.
  • Documents care provided in the medical record.
  • Participates in partnerships, projects and strategic planning involving genetics across Advantia Health.
  • Provides community outreach and education, and public policy advocacy in the field of perinatal genetics.
  • May perform duties to assure compliance with requirements.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited Genetic Counseling Program
  • Experience: 2+ years in perinatal genetic counseling is preferred; experience in perinatal/Maternal Fetal Medicine is preferred
  • Licenses/Certifications: licensed in Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
